Salutations
Everyone
I am Don Ng and I am a currently attending
Sheridan’s Advertising Account Management Program. Before I came into this
amazing program here at Sheridan, I went to York University majoring in
anthropology.
My road to advertising began during my second
year of university where I was majoring in communication studies. While I was
in communications, I have always had a great interest for going into the media
field because the media industry is exciting, and the range of opportunities to
succeed was beyond measure. Although I have learned quite a lot about today’s Canadian
media industry in communication studies, there were some issues that I had with
how I was taught about media. From my experiences, in order to get engaged to
learning about media, you should be taking part in it as an active participant
rather than to read about the theoretical aspects of the industry. Apart from
the very dull theory from communication studies, majority of my communications
professors would always reference Jersey Shore for some reason which I believed
was very insignificant to the study and the understanding of communication
studies and the overall media sector. From that point on, I decided to switch
my major to anthropology where I have found great success in learning about
culture, ethnicity and society as a whole. With the addition of my growing
interest and success in anthropology, I took a course called Public
Anthropology during my fourth year of university and on the first day, my
professor immediately talked about his ethnographic research on the advertising
industry which was a field I have been stumbling on even when I left
communication studies. He talked about how the field of advertising was in
great need of social scientists and how these researcher’s qualitative research
is much needed in the industry to further understand today’s consumers. Fast forward
to the end of that course, I told this professor of mine that would it be smart
if I just go into advertising with my anthropology degree which he immediately
said yes and here I am now.
